Süper Lig clubs propose 12-player model to TFF for foreign player rule

The status of foreign players has returned to the agenda ahead of the new season in the Trendyol Süper Lig. In evaluations held at the Union of Clubs, a broad consensus has emerged in favor of changing the current 10+4 system.

According to Akşam, the proposal that clubs are preparing to submit to the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) highlights increasing the number of foreign players to 12 and adopting a more flexible structure for age requirements. Under the current practice, clubs can have 10 foreign players without age restrictions, while the other 4 foreign players in the squad must be 23 years old or younger.

DEMAND FOR FLEXIBILITY IN AGE REQUIREMENTS

In the new model being considered by the clubs, a formula is being evaluated where the number of foreign players subject to age criteria could be set between 2 and 5, rather than a fixed 4. This regulation aims to provide clubs with more room for maneuver in squad planning.

Another demand from Süper Lig teams is to avoid frequent changes to the foreign player status. Clubs want the new system to be maintained for at least two seasons and for transfer planning to be conducted within this framework of stability.

It is noted that Fenerbahçe is in favor of completely lifting the foreign player limit. However, it is stated that this approach does not receive support from Anatolian clubs, which have reservations regarding the balance of economic and sporting competition.

The Union of Clubs is expected to present its joint demands to TFF officials today. Following the meeting, the federation is expected to re-evaluate the current regulation and clarify the decision-making process regarding the foreign player status to be implemented in the new season.
