It was previously reported that a police officer had been critically injured and hospitalized after being struck by a flare during incidents that broke out at a volleyball match played between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in Athens. However, in the latest statement, it was announced that the 31-year-old officer, who was undergoing treatment, has lost his life.

The officer, who suffered severe injuries requiring amputation following the incident, was receiving treatment at Nikaia Hospital. Unfortunately, the statement confirmed that the officer has passed away.

Following this tragic event, a suspect was taken into custody. Furthermore, the Greek government had announced that they would take new measures to combat violence in sports and that Super League matches would be played behind closed doors until February 12, 2024.
