Trump appeals to FIFA over Balogun's red card: Decision fuels independence debate
U.S. President Trump announced he spoke with FIFA President Infantino regarding Balogun's red card suspension; the decision-making process has become a subject of debate.
The red card shown to U.S. national team player Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup has moved beyond a simple on-field dispute. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding Balogun's suspension and requested a review of the incident.
Arguing that the play was not a foul, Trump stated, "I am someone who loves sports and I really understand sports well. That was not a foul. It wasn't even a rule violation. It was just two men running at full speed and colliding accidentally."

Describing the fact that Balogun will be unable to play in the next match due to the red card as an "injustice," Trump said, "How can you punish someone for a match that hasn't been played yet? This is very unfair, you cannot do this. So yes, I asked FIFA to review it."
HE ALSO TARGETED THE REFEREE
In his statement, Trump also lashed out at the match referee in addition to the decision. Claiming that "if you look into the referee's background, it's a bit suspicious," Trump did not share any concrete evidence regarding this allegation.
Following FIFA's decision regarding Balogun's suspension, the path was cleared for the American player to take the field against Belgium. However, the development is being debated not only over the accuracy of the red card decision but also because the head of the host nation directly intervened in FIFA's decision-making processes.
FIFA's close relations with political powers under Infantino's leadership have been the subject of criticism before. The Balogun file has brought questions about the independence of football and how the principle of fair competition will be protected during the World Cup back to the agenda.
