UEFA announces its demand: Champions League obstacle for Girona

Uncertainty continues regarding whether Girona, which has had a historic season in LaLiga and qualified for European competition for the first time, will be able to participate in the Champions League.

A new move has come from UEFA regarding Girona, one of the teams in which City Football Group, the owner of Manchester City, is a shareholder.

According to a report in The Times, UEFA has informed City Football Group that it must reduce its stake in Girona, stating that otherwise, the Spanish team will not be able to compete in the Champions League next season.

The report stated that UEFA has sent the rules regarding multi-club ownership for next season's European competitions to the teams.

City Football Group owns 100 percent of Manchester City and 47 percent of Girona. According to UEFA rules, this ratio must not exceed 30 percent.

TEMPORARY PROVISION ON THE AGENDA

Beyond City Football Group reducing its shares in Girona or Girona being relegated to the Europa League, there is another option available.

The letter sent to the clubs stated that for these situations, all shares of the teams could be transferred to a foundation audited by UEFA, but this rule would only be valid for the 2024-25 season.

It was recalled that this rule was used in the agreement made with RedBird Capital, the owner of Milan and Toulouse.
