Uncertainty over financial violations at Manchester City

Uncertainty continues at Manchester City, which has become the center of controversy for allegedly violating financial rules in the Premier League. While the club's appeal against the independent commission's decision is ongoing, manager Enzo Maresca did not provide a clear guarantee regarding whether he would remain in his position following potential sanctions.

In his first press conference following the decision, Maresca stated that he trusts the club's management. However, the Italian manager gave a cautious response to questions about his future should the appeal be rejected, emphasizing that the process is still underway.

Stating that he is happy working at Manchester City, Maresca reiterated his confidence in the management team. Nevertheless, he avoided making a definitive statement regarding what decision he would make following any potential sanctions.

APPEAL PROCESS WILL BE DECISIVE

In the independent commission's decision announced by the Premier League on September 29, it was stated that Manchester City seriously violated financial rules between the 2009-2010 and 2017-2018 seasons. The decision stated that the club inflated its income and understated its expenses through commercial agreements.

According to the commission, these transactions were arranged in a way that provided a financial advantage of over 900 million pounds during the nine-season period. It was also determined that Manchester City violated its cooperation obligations during the investigation process.

The club's management appealed the decision on October 1, denying the allegations. Manchester City argues that there are legal and material errors in the commission's assessment. Depending on the outcome of the appeal, sanctions such as fines, points deductions, or expulsion from the Premier League could be on the agenda. However, there is no finalized penalty against the club yet.

During the press conference, Maresca was also reminded of former manager Pep Guardiola's 2022 statement that he would leave if he learned he had been lied to regarding financial matters. Maresca preferred to wait for the appeal process to be completed before making an assessment on this matter.

Under the shadow of the controversy, City will travel to face Liverpool on Sunday, October 11. Maresca, whose Manchester side has won its first five league matches and sits in first place, said that the players should focus on the match rather than developments off the pitch. The Italian manager also announced that Erling Haaland is fit to play in the match.
