United Nations declares that day as "World Football Day"

In the session held at the UN General Assembly, it was emphasized that, like some other sports, football should also be celebrated with a special day due to its contribution to world peace and development.

The resolution, which proposed that May 25 be celebrated as "World Football Day" and was submitted to the General Assembly with the sponsorship of more than 160 countries, including Turkey and Palestine, which holds observer member status, was adopted unanimously.

The determination of this day dedicated to football was based on the fact that May 25, 2024, marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament in history where all regions were represented, held during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

In the resolution letter shared by the UN, it was confirmed that "sport is an important enabler of sustainable development," while its contribution to "the realization of peace, the promotion of tolerance and respect, and the empowerment of gender" was highlighted.

The letter referred to the role of FIFA, the international governing body of football, as well as the important role of regional and national football federations and related associations in promoting the game.

In the resolution letter, all nations, UN bodies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector were invited to celebrate World Football Day on May 25 in line with national priorities and to spread the benefits of football for everyone.
