US skateboarder shares: Olympic medal has rusted

Controversies at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which began with the cleanliness of the Seine River, have continued with the cardboard beds. 

According to a report by The Telegraph, US skateboarder Nyjah Huston has revealed that his medal showed significant signs of wear just one week after winning it in Paris.

In a post shared on his social media account, it was visible that the back of the bronze medal won by Nyjah Huston had cracked, and the bronze color on the front appeared to have a rusted look.

In a video shared on Instagram, Huston said, "These Olympic medals look great when they're brand new. But after letting it sit on my skin with some sweat, and letting my friends wear it over the weekend..." while bringing the medal closer to his phone's camera to show the damage.

'LOOKS LIKE IT WENT TO WAR'

Nyjah Huston also shared a photo of his medal from the day he won it, before it began to tarnish, and added the following note: 

- Apparently, Olympic medals are not as high quality as you might think. I don't know, we need to raise the quality a bit. The medal looks like it went to war.

WHAT ARE THE 2024 PARIS OLYMPIC MEDALS MADE OF?

Every medal awarded at the Olympics, including silver and bronze, contains pieces from Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower (pieces removed during the tower's renovation).

This means that every medal awarded features a piece of the Eiffel Tower on its front. In the center of all medals is an 18-gram hexagon, while the back features the goddess of victory, Nike.

The Paris Mint produced a total of more than 5,000 medals, 2,600 of which were for the Olympics and 2,400 for the Paralympic Games. Each medal weighs approximately 530 grams and is protected by a blue box designed by the luxury brand Chaumet.

After the first medals at the Paris Games were awarded, reports regarding the size of the medals had drawn attention. However, the size of the medals has been standard since the London 2012 Olympic Games. That is, all medals have had a diameter of 85 mm since 2012.
