Before the match, which was scheduled to start at 20.45 yesterday (December 29), Saudi authorities did not permit banners and t-shirts featuring Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Following this crisis, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray decided not to take the field.

Former footballer Batuhan Karadeniz slammed TFF President Mehmet Büyükekşi and TFF executive Hamit Altıntop on a channel where he works as a commentator.

Emphasizing that the name of the Super Cup should henceforth be the “Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Cup,” Karadeniz stated the following;

"I extend my endless thanks to Ali Koç and Dursun Özbek. I thank all the players who did not play there and did not take the field, because you showed there today that our character and our country are not for sale for any currency. If you, as the President of the Turkish Football Federation, are still negotiating until the very end for the Super Cup—which from now on will be called the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Super Cup—then do not come back to this country. They should investigate this; I have never seen such Islam, such Turkishness, or such patriotism. Maybe this will be my last broadcast, but damn it. You have disgraced us to the world!"
