National Football Team Head Coach Vincenzo Montella spoke about the team's situation and recent criticism during the press conference held before the UEFA Nations League match against Belgium.
Montella stated that he accepts criticism personally but is uncomfortable with the harsh comments directed at the players. The Italian coach supported his players by saying, "If there is going to be criticism, it can be directed at me; I can handle it."
CALL FOR SUPPORT FOR PLAYERS
Emphasizing that the National Team is in the process of adapting to the League A level, Montella pointed out that Belgium is a quality team ranked high in the FIFA rankings. Stating that some absences are felt in the squad, the head coach expressed that the absence of Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Kenan, and Orkun is significant.
Evaluating the performance in the Italy match, Montella said that the first half went poorly, but they reacted in the second half. Stating that staying in League A is not easy, Montella noted that despite this, they go into every match to win.
Touching on the subject of young players, Montella noted that adapting to this level takes time. Stating that he likes to give opportunities to young players, the coach conveyed that it would be more appropriate for players to contribute to the team gradually.
Explaining that the summer period was difficult for him, Montella said, "This summer was a painful summer. For me, it was not just the World Cup; I also experienced my own family events." Stating that the president did not leave him alone, Montella used the expression, "I can say that victory has a thousand fathers, while defeats are orphans."
Speaking about Can Uzun and Enes Ünal, Montella said that young players should not be pushed aside due to mistakes. Reminding that Enes Ünal had a long-term injury, Montella emphasized that the player is being followed closely but that there is no need to rush.
Montella concluded his words with a call for support from the fans. "I am the same Montella, only my hair has turned a bit whiter," said the head coach, expressing that if the fans stand by the players, the team will reach better levels.
