Volleyball player nicknamed 'Hürrem Sultan' joins VakıfBank!

Russian volleyball player Marina Markova, nicknamed 'Hürrem Sultan', who previously played for Muratpaşa Belediyesi in Turkey, has transferred to VakıfBank.

VakıfBank Women's Volleyball Team has announced the signing of 23-year-old Russian outside hitter Marina Markova, who will play for Jakarta Elektrik PLN during the summer period, as part of their planning for the 2024-2025 season.

In a statement from the yellow-and-black club, the following was said regarding the athlete, who will join the team in August:

''Marina, welcome to the VakıfBank family. We look forward to working together and achieving great success in the new season.''

PLAYED FOR 2 DIFFERENT TEAMS LAST SEASON

Born in Russia on January 27, 2001, Marina Markova played in the Leningradka Saint Petersburg youth system from 2016 to 2019, and played at Syracuse University between 2019 and 2022.

She spent the 2022-2023 season at the University of Florida.

Transferring to Sultanlar League team Muratpaşa Belediyesi at the beginning of the 2023-2024 season, Marina Markova delivered a successful performance with 411 points in her half-season in the Sultanlar League.

The Russian outside hitter transferred to Igor Gorgonzola Novara during the mid-season break. Markova, who won the CEV Challenge Cup title, also played in the semifinals of the Italian League.

Marina Markova was given the nickname 'Hürrem Sultan' by Turkish volleyball fans.
