William Carvalho testifies over sexual assault allegations

Portuguese footballer William Carvalho, who plays for the Spanish club Real Betis, has testified in court over sexual assault allegations.

Carvalho, who is accused of sexually assaulting a 30-year-old woman at a hotel in Seville on August 9, 2023, appeared before a judge at the Seville Provincial Court. The Portuguese footballer was released after giving his statement.

William Carvalho stated that he knew the woman who made the accusation and denied the sexual assault charge.

The woman in question had filed a criminal complaint against Carvalho on August 16 through an association.

The Spanish press reported that, according to police and witnesses at the hotel, there is no evidence of sexual assault, and it is expected that the investigation will be closed.

While sexual assault cases have shown a significant increase in Spain in recent years, according to Ministry of Interior data, 19 thousand 13 sexual assault allegations were made in 2023.

The fact that the trial of Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, who faces up to 12 years in prison on sexual assault charges, is being heard this week at the Barcelona Provincial Court has also increased the media impact of the incident.
