A 4,000-year-old secret: The mystery of the Egyptian pyramids is being solved

In a study published in the journal Nature, it was stated that a 'lost branch' of the Nile River may have played a major role in the construction of 31 mysterious structures, including the famous Giza pyramids located southwest of Cairo, the capital of Egypt.

In the study conducted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington in the US, it was stated that the branch of the river, called Ahramat—which means pyramids in Arabic—was located in the area surrounding the pyramids.

Researcher Eman Ghoneim stated that they believe they may have reached the great mystery of the pyramids, noting that they knew the materials used during construction were transported by waterway, but had not been able to find exactly where this channel was or its size.

DISAPPEARED DUE TO SANDSTORMS

Stating that they reached a river branch that disappeared as a result of sandstorms thousands of years ago following a detailed examination of satellite, radar, soil, and geographical records, Ghoneim noted that the waterway in question was located right on the edge of 31 structures, including the Giza pyramids, which were built between 4,700 and 3,700 years ago.

Meanwhile, the Giza pyramids, which take their names from the kings of the period, continue to stand as the tombs of a father, son, and grandson: the largest, Cheops (King Khufu); the middle pyramid, Khafre (King Khafre); and the small pyramid, Mykerinos (King Menkaure).

The region, which also houses the Great Pyramid of Giza, described as one of the seven wonders of the world, hosts millions of tourists every year.
