Safest countries for solo travel announced: Europe dominates the top 10
San Marino topped the list covering more than 100 countries by Squaremouth, with seven of the top 10 destinations located in Europe.
For those planning to travel alone, safety remains one of the most decisive factors in choosing a route. In a study by the US-based travel insurance comparison platform Squaremouth, which evaluated more than 100 countries, the safest destinations for solo travelers were ranked.
San Marino took the top spot on the list with a risk index of 0.78 out of 10. The microstate in Europe stood out in criteria such as the local population's high perception of personal safety, access to healthcare, and low environmental risks. According to the research, 90 percent of survey participants in San Marino stated that they felt comfortable walking alone at night.
Squaremouth considered countries with "very high" or "high" levels of development according to the Human Development Index in its evaluation. Indicators such as countries' Global Peace Index scores, safety perceptions based on Numbeo data, median mobile internet download speeds, and access to healthcare were compared.
The research also reminds us that no destination is completely risk-free. However, choosing countries that are stable in terms of conflict and security is seen as an important step to reduce risks, especially for those traveling alone for the first time.
TOP 10 ON THE LIST
Following San Marino, another European microstate, Andorra, took second place. Andorra's risk score was calculated as 1.33 out of 10. The city-state of Singapore entered the third spot with a score of 1.56.
While Austria and Czechia rounded out the top five, European countries formed a remarkable weight in the overall ranking. Seven of the top 10 destinations are located on the European continent. Estonia, Denmark, and Slovenia were also among the European countries that made the list.
- 1. San Marino
- 2. Andorra
- 3. Singapore
- 4. Austria
- 5. Czechia
- 6. Qatar
- 7. Estonia
- 8. Brunei
- 9. Denmark
- 10. Slovenia
In addition to Singapore, Qatar and Brunei also appeared in the top 10 from outside Europe. These results show that for those planning solo travel, practical elements such as safety perception, health infrastructure, and digital access are increasingly being taken into account when choosing a route.
Experts emphasize that in addition to choosing a destination for solo travel, basic precautions such as researching the accommodation area, planning transportation for late hours in advance, saving emergency numbers, and reviewing travel insurance should not be neglected.
