Japanese manga artist and character designer Akira Toriyama (68) has died due to an acute subdural hematoma.

In a statement released by his family, it was said, "Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he was able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Toriyama's unique world of creation will continue to be loved by everyone for a long time to come."

WHO IS AKIRA TORIYAMA?

Akira Toriyama (April 5, 1955 – March 1, 2024) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer.

Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump are the manga series that brought him recognition. As a character designer, he created characters for the Dragon Quest video game series.

Because Toriyama's work is extremely popular and influential, he is considered one of the manga artists who changed the history of manga and has been a source of inspiration for many other manga artists.

He won the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for shojo manga with Dr. Slump, which sold 35 million copies in Japan. After the manga ended, an anime adaptation was produced in 1997.

His subsequent series, Dragon Ball, became the world's most successful and popular manga. With over 230 million copies sold worldwide, it remained the best-selling manga of all time for a long period. Dragon Ball also has anime adaptations.
