Researchers estimate that 2,000 to 4,000 golden lancehead vipers live on Snake Island in Brazil; this means one to two snakes per 200 square meters, or 25 to 50 snakes per American football field.

The lancehead snake species is responsible for 90 percent of snakebite-related deaths in Brazil. These snakes can exceed half a meter in length. Their most lethal aspect is that they possess a powerful and fast-acting venom that melts the flesh around the bite site.
