With the start of the fishing season in the Black Sea, the bonito that adorned fish stalls has seen a major price increase due to adverse weather conditions and a decrease in the catch. Bonito, which was sold for 50 liras apiece at the beginning of the season, is now finding buyers for up to 150 liras in Samsun.

WEATHER CONDITIONS CHALLENGE FISHERMEN

Fishermen in Samsun state that boats have been unable to set sail due to poor weather conditions and that this situation is reflected in the prices.

Fisherman Halit Bayrak stated that they have no influence on the rising prices, saying, "Boats cannot set sail due to bad weather conditions, so there is less fish being caught. This bonito will be available for another month, God willing. There is an increase in all fish prices."

FISH GET LARGER AS PRICES RISE

Dündar Kırbaş, who works as a fisherman in Saathane Square, also confirms the increase in fish prices. Kırbaş said, "At the beginning of the season, bonito was 50 liras, then it became 70-80 liras. Now it is sold between 130 and 150 liras. The reason for the price increase is bad weather conditions and the scarcity of fish. However, the fish are also getting larger; the bonito we are selling right now are 800-900 grams."

PRICE INCREASES IN WHITING AND RED MULLET TOO

It is not just bonito; prices have also risen for fish species such as whiting and red mullet. Fisherman Halit Bayrak said, "Whiting is 150 liras, and red mullet is 100 liras. We are also expecting anchovies to appear next month."

CITIZENS COMPLAIN ABOUT FISH PRICES

The increase in fish prices has also caused a reaction from citizens. Samsun resident Nail Aytekin complained, saying, "Fish is very expensive; the fish I used to buy for 50 liras is now 150 liras. How are we going to buy it at these prices?"

Günay Birvar said, "We love fish, but the prices are good for those who have money and bad for those who don't. My husband is a fisherman, so we have to buy it."
