A rare error resulting from production changes during World War II is drawing significant interest among collectors today. The 1943-S bronze Lincoln cent, which has gone down in history as one of the most remarkable coin production errors in US history, is being presented to collectors in an auction organized by Stack’s Bowers Galleries.

This particular coin, which holds a PCGS AU-55 condition grade and a "Gold CAC" certificate representing high quality, is one of only seven known to exist in the world and is described as being in one of the best conditions among them.

CONDITIONS OF THE ERA AND A UNIQUE ERROR

In 1943, due to metal shortages brought on by the war, America opted for zinc-coated steel planchets in coin production. The background of this change was the need for copper and tin for military ammunition. However, after switching back to bronze planchets in 1944, these rare error coins emerged when some bronze planchets were accidentally used in the 1943 production. Thus, the extremely rare 1943-dated bronze cents have become a favorite among collectors for years.

RARITY BY THE NUMBERS

According to official data, the total known numbers of 1943 bronze Lincoln cents from different mints are as follows:

Philadelphia Mint: 17 pieces
San Francisco Mint: 7 pieces (the piece up for sale is included in this group)
Denver Mint: 1 piece

The San Francisco-minted (1943-S) example at auction is considered among the highest-condition coins of its kind, thanks to its matte luster and preserved details.

The fact that a single 1943-D bronze cent from the Denver mint sold for 840 thousand dollars in 2021 points to the scale of the popularity and value of these rare pieces in the collecting world.
