The longest night has arrived... What will happen on December 21? What will occur during the longest night?

Every year on December 21, the longest night occurs, marking the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. This night also brings with it the shortest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, conversely, days begin to lengthen.

THE BEGINNING OF WINTER: DECEMBER 21

December 21 symbolizes the beginning of summer in the Southern Hemisphere and winter in the Northern Hemisphere. From this date on, days begin to lengthen in the Northern Hemisphere, while they begin to shorten in the Southern Hemisphere. The longest night occurs because the sun's rays strike the Southern Hemisphere at a perpendicular angle. This position of the sun's rays causes the Northern Hemisphere to receive less light, and thus, while daylight hours shorten, nights lengthen.

WHERE WILL THE LONGEST NIGHT BE EXPERIENCED?

On December 21, our province of Sinop will experience the longest night in Turkey, lasting 15 hours and 6 minutes. Since Sinop is located in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be one of the cities to experience the longest night. The shortest night will be experienced in our province of Hatay with 14 hours, because Hatay is located in the south, and the night duration there will be shorter.

EQUINOX AND SOLSTICE

An equinox is the time when night and day are equal, and the sun's rays strike the equator perpendicularly. Equinoxes occur on March 21 and September 23. Another important astronomical event is the solstice; the longest night on December 21 is a part of this event. December 21, the beginning of the winter solstice, is accepted as the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
