Things to consider before starting sports

Turkey is a country at risk in terms of heart disease. This situation clearly shows how important it is to exercise to protect heart health.

However, when some rules are ignored, it can lead to undesirable results, and this risk is even greater for people with a history of heart disease.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, 4 out of every 10 deaths in Turkey are linked to cardiovascular diseases. Every year in Turkey, approximately 200 thousand people suffer a heart attack, and 100 thousand people suffer a brain hemorrhage or stroke.”

3 THINGS THAT SHOULD NOT BE NEGLECTED BEFORE STARTING SPORTS

  • Avoid sports that are not suitable for your health condition, age, and fitness level. It is important to choose the sport that is most suitable for you in terms of these criteria. Additionally, choosing a sport that you will enjoy and for which you can create a schedule that does not complicate your daily life will keep your motivation high.
  • For beginners, low-intensity exercises such as walking, cycling, or swimming are ideal. More experienced athletes can perform higher-intensity exercises such as running, tennis, or basketball. If you have a chronic illness, you can ask your doctor which sports are suitable for you.

LOW-INTENSITY EXERCISES SHOULD BE PERFORMED

  • Starting sudden and intense exercises can cause heart diseases and even heart attacks! Therefore, it is important to implement a program that progresses gradually. It is recommended to perform short-term and low-intensity exercises in the first weeks so that your body can adapt to the new exercise program. Starting slowly reduces the risk of injury, helps you maintain your motivation, and gives your body time to adapt to the exercise program.
  • You can start with 10-15 minute exercises in the first week. You can gradually increase your exercise duration and intensity each week. Be sure to listen to your body's signals. Especially if you have complaints such as chest pain, muscle pain, headache, dizziness, or shortness of breath, you should rest and definitely consult a doctor. You should also take care to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.

IT MUST BE REGULAR

  • Exercising at least 3-5 days a week for at least 30 minutes is ideal for your heart health. Regular exercise provides many benefits to the body, from strengthening heart muscles to lowering blood pressure, and from balancing cholesterol to reducing stress.
