What is fatty liver disease and what causes it? Precautions to take against fatty liver
In recent years, the number of people suffering from fatty liver disease has been rising rapidly due to both unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles. It is now known that due to poor lifestyle habits, fatty liver is frequently seen even at younger ages today. Here are the precautions that should be taken against fatty liver...
According to a study by the Turkish Gastroenterology Association, 6 out of every 10 people in our country suffer from fatty liver disease.
While fatty liver disease often does not show serious symptoms, especially in the early stages, this condition can cause inflammation and cell damage in the liver over time, significantly impairing liver functions and leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO PREVENT FATTY LIVER?
Eat a healthy diet: The increased consumption of processed foods and high-fructose foods in modern diets can lead to fatty liver and increase insulin resistance. Keep your diet free from processed foods, high-fructose sugars, and saturated fats. Diets rich in olive oil, fish, vegetables, and fruits, such as the Mediterranean diet, can be preferred.
Exercise regularly: Scientific studies reveal that a sedentary lifestyle and low levels of physical activity play a significant role among the factors leading to fatty liver. Moderate exercise performed regularly a few times a week increases fat burning, improves general health, and helps protect liver health.
Maintain your ideal weight: The rise in obesity rates in Turkey in recent years has been a major factor in the increase of fatty liver cases. Obesity and excess weight are among the most common causes of fatty liver. Excess weight can increase fat accumulation in the liver and impair liver health over time. Therefore, adopt a healthy lifestyle and get rid of excess weight.
Avoid alcohol: While the effects of alcohol consumption on the liver vary from person to person, some individuals may be more prone to liver damage due to genetic differences in alcohol metabolism. Scientific studies reveal that chronic and excessive alcohol consumption can disrupt the liver's normal functions, leading to fat accumulation, inflammation, and subsequently cirrhosis. Therefore, reducing or completely quitting alcohol consumption is vital for preventing alcohol-induced liver damage.
Do not neglect your health check-ups: It has been observed that the frequency of fatty liver is higher in diabetic patients. Some genetic and metabolic factors can lead to fatty liver even in thin or normal-weight individuals. Therefore, regular health check-ups, liver function tests, and examinations such as FibroScan (which shows liver damage) can help you monitor your liver health and detect potential problems at an early stage,” it states.
