The coronavirus, which caused millions of people to lose their lives between 2020 and 2023, continues to pose a threat worldwide through its variants following mutations.

In recent days, the JN.1 variant, which was previously studied as one of the BA.2.86 sub-lineage variants, has begun to increase its impact.

WHAT IS THE JN.1 VARIANT?

JN.1 was first reported in August 2023 and, according to the WHO, has spread to at least 41 countries so far. The CDC announced that the virus was first detected in the US in September.

Like other new variants, JN.1 is also known as part of the Omicron family.

Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, stated, "Think of (the variants) as children and grandchildren of Omicron. They are part of the same extended family, but each has its own unique personality."

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF JN.1?

It is believed that the JN.1 variant shares genetic similarities with other variants.

The symptoms of JN.1 are as follows:

-Headache

-Runny nose

-Cough

-Fatigue

-Muscle aches

-Loss of sense of taste or smell

-According to the CDC, the type and severity of symptoms a person experiences often depend on the individual's underlying health and immunity rather than the specific variant causing the infection.
