In the case of Şule Çet, who lost her life after falling from the 20th floor of a plaza in Ankara on May 29, 2018, defendant Berk Akand was released following his 18-year-and-9-month prison sentence for aiding and abetting the crimes of "intentional killing," "qualified sexual assault," and "deprivation of liberty." The posts Akand made on social media following his release sparked widespread reaction.

BACKLASH GROWS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

According to the report by Alican Uludağ, Akand's response of "I'm glad to be back, in spite of everyone" to a user who told him "Welcome back, in spite of everyone" after his release was met with backlash from social media users. Furthermore, in another post, Akand was seen using the phrases, "These are the facts for those who thought our reunion was a dream," and "we have cried enough, now we will laugh in spite of everyone."

The claims regarding Berk Akand's release were denied by the Ministry of Justice.

In the statement, which noted that all conviction rulings were upheld as a result of reviews by the appellate court and the Court of Cassation, the following was recorded:

"While the sentence of the convict named Berk Akand was being served in a closed penal institution from the date of his arrest, the aforementioned convict was transferred to an open penal institution on June 5, 2025, in accordance with the execution law and relevant legislation, and the execution of his sentence continues. This person has not been released.

Furthermore, due to a post made by the aforementioned convict during his leave while in the open penal institution, disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him, his conditions in the open penal institution were terminated, and his transfer to a closed penal institution was carried out. Judicial proceedings have been initiated under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code against those who made news and posts claiming that the person in question was released, even though he was not."

The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation into journalist Alican Uludağ, who shared the claim by saying, "Our execution system gives courage to criminals."
