Counterfeit alcohol continues to claim lives in Ankara: Death toll rises to 61

Deaths caused by counterfeit alcohol have continued in Ankara in recent days. According to the latest data, the number of those who have lost their lives has increased from 59 to 61. Furthermore, the number of people receiving treatment in hospitals is rising rapidly; 36 people are being treated in intensive care.

Within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding illegal alcohol production and sales, 30 people have been arrested, while 32 others have been released under judicial control conditions.

Authorities stated that these operations will continue and that new steps will be taken to apprehend illegal alcohol producers.

The testimonies of the individuals arrested as part of the investigation have revealed how gangs producing counterfeit alcohol operate. The suspects confessed to using the internet and social media platforms to procure ethyl alcohol. Additionally, it was determined that the alcohol was sold via hand-delivery methods, and that the counterfeit products were mostly produced in abandoned buildings and makeshift workshops rather than unlicensed shops.

Authorities have once again warned citizens that counterfeit alcohol can have fatal consequences. While it was stated that operations are continuing rapidly, law enforcement forces aim to completely prevent illegal alcohol production and sales. As concern grows over the rising death toll in Ankara, it was emphasized that more arrests and operations could be carried out.
