The 4.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Simav district of Kütahya was also felt in surrounding provinces, causing brief panic. In the preliminary assessment report published after the tremor, attention was drawn to the active fault lines in the region.

EARTHQUAKE FELT IN SURROUNDING PROVINCES

According to the report by Karar, data from the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute recorded the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.9. It was reported that the tremor occurred at a depth of 5.4 kilometers. Due to its shallow focus, the earthquake was also felt in Uşak, Balıkesir, Afyonkarahisar, and Bursa. The tremor caused brief concern in the region.

ATTENTION DRAWN TO ACTIVE FAULT LINES

In the preliminary assessment report shared by the Kandilli Observatory, it was stated that the vicinity of Simav is under the influence of the Emet-Gediz and Simav fault zones. It was noted that high-magnitude earthquakes have occurred in the past in the region, which contains active northeast-southwest trending fault lines.

PAST EARTHQUAKES RECALLED

The report included information that earthquakes with magnitudes between 6 and 7 have occurred in the region previously. In particular, the 1970 Gediz earthquake, which was recorded at a magnitude of 7, was cited as one of the significant examples of seismic activity in the region.

CALL FOR PREPAREDNESS

In the preliminary assessment report, citizens were reminded of the need to be prepared for disasters. Emphasis was placed on the importance of checking the durability of buildings and creating emergency plans.
