DEM Party statement on trustees: "Insisting on the trustee coup is a sign of political exhaustion"

Trustees have been appointed to the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and Şanlıurfa's Halfeti Municipality.

Following the appointments, the Mardin Governor's Office announced that a 10-day ban on demonstrations and events has been imposed across the province.

After the trustee appointments, the DEM Party Central Executive Board issued a statement, describing these appointments as a "sign of political exhaustion."

The statement from the DEM Party Central Executive Board is as follows:

Following Hakkari and Esenyurt, the AKP-MHP government usurped the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and Urfa's Halfeti Municipality this morning. It is significant that this coup took place on the anniversary of the parliamentary coup carried out against the will of the Kurdish people on November 4, 2016. This is a 30-year repetition of a bankrupt policy that has continued since 1994, aimed at eliminating the Kurdish people from democratic politics.

Let us state once again that this attack is an open coup carried out against the will of the people. Previous trustee coups have been rejected by the public; the practice of appointing trustees has suffered a major defeat in elections, and the people have cast their votes in favor of our party. Insisting on a trustee coup that is defeated in every election is a sign of political exhaustion. The AKP-MHP government has turned the habit of seizing through the judiciary and law enforcement what it cannot win through elections, as well as the trustee coup itself, into a regime. This attack is also a major assault on the Kurdish people's right to vote and be elected. The blockade of local governments and municipalities, where there is direct public participation, and their transformation into police stations, is a clear declaration that the current political regime has lost its democratic legitimacy.

It is a cautionary tale that those who claim to fight against tutelage and coups have themselves turned into pure coup plotters. No government in these lands has ever prospered through tyranny and oppression, and none ever will. The peoples of Turkey will never bow to this tyranny. In the last local elections, the government suffered a major loss due to these practices, and the more they insist on this method, the more they will lose.

The trustee coup is a matter of democracy and freedom for all 85 million people, and if left unchecked, it will not remain limited to just the Kurdish provinces or the municipalities usurped so far. Regardless of party or ideology, this coup is now an open threat to the right to vote and be elected and the political will of all the peoples of Turkey. On this occasion, we call upon the entire democratic public: everyone must raise their voice and objection to this illegitimate, coup-plotting mentality at the highest level.

Defending the will of the people under all circumstances and protecting the people's local governments is the reason for our party's existence. These methods and attacks not only poison every search for a solution and approach, but have also raised greater doubts regarding the government's sincerity. While we were waiting for a hand to be extended for a solution and peace, a hand was extended against the will of the people. While we were waiting for problems to be solved through dialogue and negotiation, a trap was set for the people's expectations for a solution. We will never bow down, and we will never back down from the struggle. If the government thinks it will succeed with these bankrupt methods, it is greatly mistaken. Our people will also protect their own will under all conditions and circumstances.
