Housing crisis in AFAD report: Number of earthquake survivors still living in containers revealed

On the second anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes, in which more than 53 thousand people lost their lives according to official figures, available data reveals that the grievances experienced by earthquake survivors have largely not been resolved. The greatest grievance in the earthquakes, which affected many provinces, primarily Kahramanmaraş, remains the housing crisis, even 2 years later.

Although housing promises have been made repeatedly by government members, the figures reflected in AFAD's data have laid bare that the problem continues as a crisis. According to the report compiled by Mustafa Mert Bildircin from BirGün, titled “Integrated Disaster Management-Works Carried Out in the Disaster Zone” by AFAD, a total of 649 thousand 632 people are still living in containers as of February 2025. This reveals that the government's promises regarding earthquake housing have been realized at a rate of 50 percent.

HIGHEST NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN HATAY

Despite the 731 days that have passed since the earthquakes of February 6, 2023, the distribution of citizens still living in containers by province has also been shared.

Hatay stood out as the earthquake-stricken city with the highest number of people living in container cities, with 218 thousand 379 people.

It was stated that 112 thousand 726 people in Malatya, 118 thousand 204 in Adıyaman, and 107 thousand 896 in Maraş are struggling to live in container cities.
