Internet usage rates in Turkey have been announced

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, in a written statement, evaluated the April data from the Digital 2024 Global Overview and Turkey Report, prepared by the organizations We Are Social and Meltwater, which report on digital data worldwide every year.

Stating that the mobile phone usage rate worldwide exceeded 69% in 2024, Uraloğlu noted that as of this year, 5.65 billion people worldwide use mobile phones.

Uraloğlu reported that the number of unique mobile users increased by 2.4% last year, reaching 133 million.

Pointing out that internet usage has shown a significant increase worldwide, Uraloğlu stated that 67.1% of the world's population, or 5.44 billion people, were online in 2024.

Uraloğlu drew attention to the fact that the number of global internet users has increased by 3.4% compared to last year. Stating that the number of social media users worldwide has increased by nearly 35% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and that nearly 1 billion new users have been added in the last 3 years, Uraloğlu assessed, "Although the growth in the number of users slowed down significantly last year, it continues to rise. The number of users, which was 1.7 billion in 2013 and 3.46 billion in 2018, reached 5.07 billion in April, an increase of 5.4% compared to the previous year."

"TURKEY RANKS 36TH IN INTERNET ADOPTION RATE"

Reporting that Turkey ranks 36th in internet adoption rate relative to population with 86.5%, Uraloğlu continued his statement as follows:

"When looking at the time spent on the internet, our country ranks 19th in the world with 7 hours and 6 minutes per day. While 86.5% of our population are internet users and 67.4% are social media users, 93.8% own a mobile connection. According to the report, the average download speed for cellular mobile internet is 37.66 megabits, and the average fixed internet download speed is 41.90 megabits. The primary reasons for internet usage in Turkey were identified as finding information, staying informed about news and events, researching how to do something, conducting product and brand research, and staying in touch with family and friends."

"FRIENDS ARE FOLLOWED ON SOCIAL MEDIA"

Reporting that Instagram takes the first place in monthly social media usage per user in Turkey with 21 hours and 24 minutes, and TikTok takes the second place with 20 hours and 54 minutes, Uraloğlu stated, "Friends, family, and people we know are at the top of the profiles followed on social media accounts in Turkey. This is followed by brands we have purchased or want to purchase, television shows or channels, entertainment content, influencers, and parody accounts. Turkey ranks 49th in the world in the rate of following influencers on social media compared to other countries, at 11.7%."

Stating that when looking at the rate of internet users who make online purchases every week worldwide, Turkey ranks 3rd with 64.6%, Uraloğlu noted the following:

"Factors such as free delivery, easy return policies, coupons and discounts, fast and easy payment, and customer reviews emerge as the most important reasons for citizens to turn to online shopping. When examining users who discover new brands, products, and services, it was determined that 36.8% discovered these brands through social media advertisements. This ranking was followed by search engines, television and application advertisements, and the websites of brands or products."
