Organs of woman declared brain dead bring hope to three patients

Hamide Tuncel, 41, suffered a heart attack at the Samsun Mental Health and Diseases Hospital, where she had gone for treatment, and was declared brain dead yesterday at the Samsun Training and Research Hospital, to which she had been transferred.

Her family, consulted by the hospital's Organ and Tissue Coordination teams, decided to donate Tuncel's organs.

The woman's liver was sent to Erzurum, and her corneas were sent to patients awaiting transplants at the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Faculty of Medicine.

OMÜ Faculty of Medicine Department of General Surgery faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kağan Karabulut told reporters that the family was conscious about organ donation.

Drawing attention to the importance of organ donation, Karabulut said, "The Black Sea Region is number one in Turkey in this regard; it is our region that provides the most organs. We are giving life to many people through organ donation. We thank the donating family. Organ transplantation saves lives."
