Speed limit regulation following traffic accidents in Istanbul

In Istanbul, where the total population is estimated to be approximately 20 million, the recent increase in traffic accidents has led to the implementation of a new policy.

According to a report on NTV, as of today, buses operated by IETT and Private Public Buses have been restricted to a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour. With this speed limit, the goal is to make urban travel safer.

With the new policy, the speeds of all buses will be monitored in real-time via digital systems. Speeding reports will be issued for bus drivers found to be in violation of the speed limit. These reports will be both recorded and evaluated by the relevant departments.

The impact of the policy on travel times has also become a subject of interest. It was noted that while a 10-kilometer route is covered in 6 minutes when traveling at 100 km/h, this time increases to approximately 8 minutes and 34 seconds at the new limit of 70 km/h. Officials highlighted the danger posed by speed differences in accidents and emphasized that the new policy aims to increase public safety.
