Spending limit in prisons increased
Taking action due to the difficulties inmates face in prisons regarding spending amid rising prices, the Ministry of Justice has increased the weekly canteen shopping limit to 5,000 Turkish Liras, effective January 1.
The weekly canteen spending limit applied in prisons has been increased by a decision of the Ministry of Justice. With the new regulation, the weekly shopping limit for inmates at the canteen has been raised to 5,000 Turkish Liras as of January 1.
According to a report by Saygı Öztürk from Sözcü; it was stated that the current limit had become insufficient following recent price hikes, making it difficult for convicts and detainees to meet their basic needs.
RISING PRICES TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT
Taking the high cost of living into consideration, the Ministry of Justice decided to increase the weekly spending amount. Ministry officials shared the following information regarding the new implementation:
"In accordance with the regulation regarding the use of personal funds held in trust for convicts and detainees, the weekly limit they can use for canteen purchases—excluding communication expenses, health and education expenditures, court fees and compensation costs, as well as purchases of refrigerators, samovars, fans, and televisions from the canteen—has been raised to 5,000 Turkish Liras, effective from January 1."
REGULATION ANNOUNCED TO PRISONS
The change in question has been officially notified to Chief Public Prosecutor's Offices and prison administrations. The new limit will be valid in all prisons starting from the specified date.
