Thieves rob earthquake survivor's container: They even stole the meat from the fridge

While thousands of buildings collapsed like paper in Hatay during the February 6 earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, many citizens were left homeless.

People affected by the earthquakes began living in containers. In the Haraparası neighborhood of Hatay's Antakya district, a container set up individually by the Açıkgöz family became the target of thieves. The thieves, who are believed to have broken the lock on the container's outer door to enter, stole household electronics such as a washing machine, television, and cooler, as well as the food inside the refrigerator. Realizing that thieves had entered the container, the family reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Police teams arrived at the scene shortly after and began an investigation to catch the thieves.

"THEY TOOK ALL THE MEAT IN THE FRIDGE AND EVERYTHING EDIBLE”

Stating that his sister had been a guest at their home for 2 days and that the container was targeted by thieves during this time, Ahmet Küçük said, “My sister has a container here. They came to stay with us 2 days ago. Thieves broke in last night. The thieves completely emptied the refrigerator. They took all the meat in the fridge. The thieves took everything edible. They also took the washing machine. They entered through the back window and took the television, vacuum cleaner, and whatever electric cooler there was. They ransacked the bedroom. We had received the refrigerator from a philanthropist. They even stole the plug, so it doesn't work. They broke the iron door outside. They couldn't open the steel door. They entered through the window. My sister came to us 2 days ago. This incident happened last night. We found out this morning. The police came and conducted an investigation, taking fingerprints. They took fingerprints from the refrigerators, the cupboard, and the entrances. The only things left to steal in the country were the belongings of this earthquake survivor. Now they have started targeting those belongings too.”
