TÜİK announces: Unemployment rate at its lowest level in 12 years

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published labor force data for the past year. According to the report, the number of unemployed people decreased by 151 thousand compared to 2023, falling to 3 million 113 thousand.

The unemployment rate declined by 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous year, dropping to 8.7 percent. Thus, the unemployment rate has reached its lowest level in the last 12 years; in 2012, this rate was recorded at 8.3 percent.

EMPLOYMENT RATES

According to the report, the labor force increased by 837 thousand people to 35 million 733 thousand, while the labor force participation rate rose by 0.9 percentage points to 54.2 percent. The labor force participation rate was determined to be 72.0 percent for men and 36.8 percent for women.

LABOR FORCE DATA

In 2024, the unemployment rate among the youth population aged 15-24 fell by 1.1 percentage points compared to the previous year, declining to 16.3 percent. The unemployment rate in this age group is estimated at 13.1 percent for men and 22.3 percent for women.

Of those employed, 14.8 percent worked in agriculture, 20.7 percent in industry, 6.6 percent in construction, and 57.9 percent in the service sector. Compared to the previous year, the share of the service and construction sectors in employment increased by 0.3 percentage points, while the share of the industrial sector decreased by 0.5 percentage points. There was no change in the share of the agricultural sector.
