Tuncay Mollaveisoğlu's assessment of İmamoğlu: The issue is much bigger than one person's political future

The discussions shaped around Ekrem İmamoğlu are one of the most current examples of this. However, reading this issue only through the political future of one person would be a major mistake that prevents us from understanding what is happening. Because this is a much deeper, much more comprehensive issue of democracy and the rule of law.

The picture we are facing today is not just about the fate of an individual politician; it is about how fundamental rights and freedoms will be shaped. This is a struggle regarding whether an individual's constitutional rights, freedom of thought and expression, and legal guarantees are being usurped or not. Seeing it only as a legal process experienced by a mayor means missing the essence of the issue. Yet, there is not just one person involved, but a systemic problem that concerns all citizens.

Discussions reduced to individuals prevent us from seeing the real truth. Yet the issue is about the future of the country's brightest youth, women, and children being forced into an Orwellian dystopia. The issue is whether every citizen will live in an order where they can freely express their thoughts, where no one is oppressed because of their ideas, and where the rule of law prevails.

Democracy is not limited only to votes cast at the ballot box. True democracy is possible through the protection of the principles of the rule of law, the security of freedom of expression, and citizens being able to speak without fear. Those who reduce what is happening today only to a political figure are, knowingly or unknowingly, covering up the real struggle. Yet this struggle, beyond any party or person, is directly related to the rights of the people.

The point we stand at today is not just an election debate; it is a crossroads that will determine what kind of future the law, justice, and freedoms will build. If we read this struggle only through individuals, we cannot see the real threat. Yet the issue is everyone's issue."
