2 billion dollar commitment to Bangladesh

According to reports in the national press, Muhammad Yunus, who leads the interim government in Bangladesh with the title of "chief adviser," met with World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Abdoulaye Seck in the capital, Dhaka.

During the meeting, Seck stated that the World Bank could mobilize approximately 2 billion dollars in new loans within the current fiscal year to support critical reforms, flood management, improved air quality, and health.

Stating that they want to support Bangladesh as much and as quickly as possible, Seck also emphasized that the bank would support the country's critical financial needs.

Seck noted that the reforms are "critically important" for Bangladesh and for the youth, including the 2 million people who enter the job market every year.

Yunus, in turn, told Seck that the World Bank needs to be flexible to finance Bangladesh's reforms and help start a new journey following 15 years of "extreme mismanagement."

Expressing that they need a major driving force, Yunus said, "We must build new structures from these ashes."

WHAT HAPPENED?

In Bangladesh, protests led by students began in mid-July following a decision to reserve public sector quotas for the children of those who served in the 1971 War of Independence.

It was announced that the protests were called off after the Supreme Court reduced the quota percentages at the end of July.

Following the banning of the Jamaat-e-Islami party and its student wing, who were held responsible for the violence during the demonstrations, protesters took to the streets again, this time calling for "justice" for those who lost their lives in the protests.

Hundreds of people lost their lives and thousands were detained during the violent incidents in Bangladesh.

As the violence continued to escalate, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left her official residence and traveled to India by military helicopter, during which time protesters stormed the Prime Minister's official residence.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government on August 8 and began his duties.
