2 mayoral candidates killed in Mexico

Noe Ramos Ferretiz, who was running for re-election as mayor of Ciudad Mante in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas on behalf of the opposition coalition of the National Action Party (PAN) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was attacked. Ferretiz lost his life as a result of a stabbing attack.

FOUND DEAD AFTER MISSING PERSONS REPORT

Alberto Garcia, a mayoral candidate for the city of San Jose Independencia in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, was found dead one day after he was reported missing.

State prosecutors announced in a statement that Garcia was found beaten to death near the city.

VIOLENCE AGAINST POLITICIANS ON THE RISE

The deaths of Ramos Ferretiz and Garcia have once again brought the increasing acts of violence against politicians in Mexico to the forefront ahead of the general and local elections to be held on June 2. In Mexico, where an increase in violence against politicians is observed during every election period, more than 80 mayors have been killed by organized crime gangs since 2006.

Gangs in the country threaten candidates during election periods and use violence as a tool to force politicians to cooperate with them.
