2-year-old child and mother injured in Munich terror attack die: Condolence message from Scholz

In the German city of Munich, a vehicle drove into a crowd during a demonstration organized by members of the Verdi labor union. A 2-year-old girl and her mother were critically injured in the incident. German police announced that the victims passed away shortly after.

The attack took place on Seidlstrasse Street on Thursday at 10:30 local time. A total of 28 people were injured in the incident. The injured included union members and civilians in the vicinity.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a statement regarding the attack, expressing the following:

''I am deeply shocked and saddened by the death of the young child and the woman who succumbed to their injuries following the attack in Munich. The suffering of their loved ones is unimaginable. I extend my deepest condolences to them. The entire country is mourning with them.''

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE ATTACKER?

German media reported that the driver who carried out the attack is an Afghan immigrant named Farhad N. It was stated that Farhad N. was born in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, in 2001 and arrived in Germany at the end of 2016.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees rejected Farhad N.'s asylum application. However, the driver continued to live in Munich by obtaining a permit that halted his deportation.

The 28 people injured in the attack were taken to the hospital following the incident. It was reported that the treatment of the injured is ongoing. Authorities announced that the investigation into the incident is continuing.
