22 dead in mine collapse in Tanzania

A collapse occurred at the Ng'alita mine in Bariadi, located in Tanzania's Simiyu region. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced that 22 people lost their lives due to the collapse, stating, "Our fellow Tanzanians were trying to earn a living for themselves and their families."

Bariadi District Commissioner Simon Simalenga stated, "We were initially told there were 19 to 20 people trapped in the mine, but unfortunately, we have recovered 22 bodies," adding that a group of people had begun mining in the mineral-rich area about three weeks ago before government safety procedures were implemented.

ONE OF THE WORLD'S LARGEST GOLD PRODUCERS

Simalenga said, "The regional mining officer visited them and halted operations at the mine as they were working on the necessary procedures."

Unregulated and illegal mining is common in Tanzania, which is one of the world's largest gold producers.
