30 people killed in Mexican cartel clash: 'El Chapo' and 'El Mayo' factions settle scores

The Mexican government has announced that clashes have been taking place between two groups in Sinaloa, a state synonymous with drug cartels, since September 9, and that at least 30 people have lost their lives so far.

Mexican Secretary of National Defense Luis Cresencio Sandoval stated in a press briefing that the clashes began on September 9 and that two soldiers are among those who have lost their lives.

Sandoval stated that 2,200 soldiers and national guardsmen have been deployed to the state of Sinaloa.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also argued that the army is protecting the public and ensuring that clashes do not occur between criminal groups.

Authorities reported that at least 30 people have died in the ongoing clashes between two groups affiliated with the Sinaloa cartel.

It is estimated that the clashes in the state of Sinaloa between the sons of Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed 'El Chapo', and supporters of Ismael Zambada Garcia, nicknamed 'El Mayo', are a struggle for regional dominance.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on July 25 that Guzman's son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, and Garcia had been taken into custody in Texas.

Garcia, who appeared before a judge on July 27, was arrested.

Guzman was sentenced to life imprisonment last July in a case heard in the U.S. state of New York.

Joaquin Guzman, who escaped from two high-security prisons in Mexico in 2001 and 2015, was last captured in January 2016 and extradited to the U.S.
