4 million people face food crisis in Ethiopia

The statement noted that insufficient rainfall has led to a food crisis, emphasizing that Ethiopia is facing one of the most severe food crises in the world.

The statement, which conveyed that the humanitarian crisis in the country must be addressed urgently, recorded that recurring drought incidents in 2022 continue to affect the Afar, Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, South, and Southwest regions.

The statement expressed that the negative impact of climate change on agricultural activities has also made access to food significantly more difficult.

FOOD AID SUSPENDED IN APRIL 2023

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) suspended food aid in April 2023 following allegations that a significant portion of the aid sent to Ethiopia's conflict-affected Tigray region was being diverted elsewhere.

USAID had published reports stating that UN aid sent to Tigray, where millions of people are in need of assistance, was being stolen and sold in markets.
