46 subglacial lakes discovered in East Antarctica
Researchers in China have reported the discovery of 46 new subglacial lakes under the East Antarctic ice sheet.
According to the Xinhua news agency, researchers from the Polar Research Institute of China, the China University of Geosciences, and the Southern University of Science and Technology of China have examined the ice sheets in East Antarctica.
The researchers stated that they used a new method to analyze the waveforms of ice-bed reflections seen in "ice radar" data and conducted a comprehensive study of the Gamburtsev Mountain Range.
Noting that they discovered 46 subglacial lakes in the region as a result of the study, the researchers emphasized that this research is important for understanding the dynamics of Antarctica's ice sheets and the stages of life.
The researchers pointed out that there are various subglacial lakes beneath Antarctica, which is covered by an ice sheet approximately 2,400 meters thick.
