500-ton gold storage facility established for the ultra-wealthy

In recent weeks, gold has risen in the precious metals market as a safe haven during turbulent times. With increasing geopolitical risks, investors have once again turned to gold. Gold, which has attracted the attention of investors, has seen a major surge in 2024.

Due to the increasing demand for high-security storage areas for the world's wealthiest individuals,  A massive storage facility called The Reserve has been built in Singapore. This 180,000-square-foot facility, built by Silver Bullion Pte Ltd. and notable for its storage capacity of 10,000 tons of silver and 500 tons of gold, was constructed because the company's previous vault had reached capacity.

'WE NEED MORE VAULTS'

This 180,000-square-foot facility, built by Silver Bullion Pte Ltd., was constructed because the company's previous vault had reached capacity. According to CNBC-e, the company stated that the new facility has received significant interest from clients and that more vaults are needed. The firm's founder, Gregor Gregersen, said, "The feedback we are receiving shows that we need more vaults."

THE BEST SECOND QUARTER IN THE LAST 25 YEARS

While the ounce price of gold exceeded $2,500 last week, reaching record levels, an increase of more than 20 percent was also observed in silver. Demand for gold coins and bullion from family offices in Asia, in particular, has exploded, and over-the-counter market purchases recorded their best second quarter in the last 25 years.

Purchases made in the over-the-counter market reached 450 tons in 2023 and are expected to expand further in 2024. This intense demand for gold has been supported by factors such as rising geopolitical risks, central bank purchases, and interest from Chinese consumers. Philip Klapwijk, managing director of the Hong Kong-based Precious Metals Insights Ltd., said, "People are not happy with the direction the world is heading economically and politically. Therefore, they are increasing their allocations to gold."

PHYSICAL GOLD IS SEEN AS SAFER

Although holding gold physically has some disadvantages, it offers advantages such as being free from counterparty risk, meaning it is free from the risk of another party failing to fulfill their commitment. JPMorgan analysts stated that in the post-pandemic period, factors such as privacy and tangibility have become more important for high-net-worth investors. While investors avoid ETFs where their transactions are recorded, physical gold is found to be safer and more attractive than paper certificates.

SINGAPORE AS A LEADING HUB

Singapore has become a leading hub meeting this need thanks to its stable and neutral regulatory regime. New Zealand Vault in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, has also increased its stocks due to demand from family offices in Hong Kong and the US. The company's director, John Mulvey, said, "One of New Zealand's advantages is that we have no natural enemies. We are seen as a safe haven far from the world's hotspots."
