5,000 people died due to extreme heat

Rising temperatures in France in 2023 caused deaths across the country. According to reports in the national press, Guillaume Boulanger, a researcher at the Public Health Agency, announced the number of deaths caused by extreme heat during the summer months of 2023.

In his press statement, Boulanger stated that 3 percent of total deaths during the summer of 2023 were caused by extreme heat. The severity of this situation in the country was revealed by the fact that more than 5,000 people lost their lives.

It was noted that approximately 3,700 of these deaths involved individuals aged 75 and over. The year 2023 was recorded as one of the periods with the highest number of heat-related deaths in France in recent years.

Following the 4 extreme heat waves experienced in the country last year, the 2023 summer period went down in history as the 4th hottest summer recorded since 1900. This situation serves as an important warning at a time when air temperatures are steadily increasing and the effects of climate change are being felt more intensely.

It is emphasized that elderly and vulnerable groups are particularly at higher risk from extreme heat, and therefore, it is necessary to bring air temperatures under control and take the necessary precautions.
