5th volcanic eruption in Iceland since December
A volcanic eruption has occurred for the 5th time since December near the town of Grindavik on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula.
A volcano has erupted and spewed lava on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, which has a population of approximately 30,000. In a statement issued by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), it was stated that "an eruption has begun at the Sundhnukur crater north of Grindavik."
Prior to the volcanic eruption, which is the 5th to occur on the peninsula since December, the country's largest tourist attraction, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, was evacuated.
Operations continue at Keflavik International Airport, located just 20 kilometers north of the eruption site, while passengers have been advised to monitor their flight information.
The last eruption in the region occurred on March 16.
Iceland, which is situated between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates—the two largest tectonic plates in the world—is home to 32 active volcanoes.
