6.3 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan: 2,000 people dead
The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Afghanistan's Herat province yesterday has risen to 2,053.
Mullah Janan Sayeq, spokesperson for the Taliban's Ministry of State for Disaster Management, which took control of the Afghanistan administration some time ago, made a press statement regarding the earthquakes in the country.
In the statement made by Sayeq, it was announced that a 6.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Herat. Minister Sayeq shared the information that ''2,053 people lost their lives and 9,240 people were injured'' due to the earthquakes that occurred yesterday.
Abdul Wahid Rayan, spokesperson for the Taliban's Ministry of Information and Culture, also stated that approximately 6 villages were leveled in the earthquakes, over 2,000 people lost their lives, and hundreds of people are under the rubble.
URGENT CALL FOR AID
Herat Governor Noor Ahmad Islamjar had called on the international community for urgent aid for the earthquake victims, reporting that they are in urgent need of medicine and food supplies.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a series of earthquakes measuring 6.3, 5.5, 4.7, 6.3, 5.9, 4.6, 4.8, and subsequently 4.9 in magnitude occurred in Herat province, located on the Iranian border in western Afghanistan, starting from 11:00 local time yesterday.
In the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Paktika province in June 2022, approximately 1,200 people had lost their lives.
