7 people lost their lives in 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines

The death toll from the earthquake in the Philippines is becoming clearer. Ednar Dayanghirang, Regional Director of the Office of Civil Defense in Davao, announced that at least 7 people lost their lives in the 7.4 magnitude earthquake, which had its epicenter off the coast of Davao Oriental province on Mindanao Island in the Philippines.

Dayanghirang stated that the loss of life occurred in cities and towns near the epicenter of the earthquake.

Another official emphasized that many buildings and bridges were heavily damaged in the earthquake, stating that efforts to clarify the extent of the destruction in the region are still ongoing.

TSUNAMI WARNING LIFTED

The tsunami warning issued for many regions following the earthquake, which was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at a depth of 20 kilometers at 09:43 local time, was lifted in the following hours. However, in a statement made by PHIVOLCS, the local population was warned to remain vigilant against aftershocks and to stay away from coastal areas.

"UN READY TO ASSIST"

United Nations (UN) Coordinator in the Philippines, Arnauld Peral, stated that UN teams in the country are assessing the situation and will cooperate with relevant government agencies, adding, "UN agencies are ready to assist if the Philippine government needs it."
