8 Muslim Brotherhood leaders sentenced to death

An Egyptian court has sentenced high-ranking Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) leaders to death in a case concerning incidents that occurred in the vicinity of Rabaa Square following the 2013 military coup, during which a sit-in was held.

According to AA, citing the Egyptian news agency MENA, the hearing for the case regarding the events in the Manassa area near Rabaa Square in 2013 was held today at the Emergency State Supreme Security Court.

COURT ISSUES DEATH SENTENCES

The court handed down death sentences for 8 leaders from the Ikhwan and Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya organizations. It was stated that those sentenced to death include 80-year-old Ikhwan Guidance Bureau Chairman Mohamed Badie, as well as Mohamed El-Beltagy, Mahmoud Ezzat, Amr Mohamed Zaki, Osama Yassin, Safwat Hegazi, Assem Abdel-Maged, and Mohamed Abdel-Maqsoud.

During the hearing, 37 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment (25 years), 6 defendants to 15 years of aggravated imprisonment each, and 7 defendants to 10 years of aggravated imprisonment each, while 21 defendants were acquitted.

It was noted that the court's verdict is not subject to appeal. Previously, death sentences had been issued against Ikhwan leaders in Egypt, but those were subject to appeal.

According to Egyptian law, a death sentence is executed after the approval of the president. The president has the authority to commute the death sentence to imprisonment, pardon the convict, stay the execution of the sentence, or decide to release the convict.

In Egypt, protests began in Rabaa Square following the removal of former President Mohamed Morsi from office by a coup on July 3, 2013, and continued until August 14, 2013.
