A first in Germany since Hitler

Exit polls have been released for the elections held in the German states of Thuringia and Saxony.

In the elections held in both states, the anti-immigrant, far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany) Party is on the verge of achieving a historic milestone. According to exit polls by the broadcaster ZDF, the AfD Party is in first place in Thuringia with 33.5 percent of the vote, putting it on track to become the first far-right party to win an election since World War II. The AfD's closest rival in the state, the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), placed second with 24.5 percent.

The polls indicated that in the state of Saxony, the CDU is only half a percentage point ahead of the AfD, with 31.9 percent. The left-wing populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), which like the AfD demands stricter controls on immigration and calls for an end to the arming of Ukraine, placed third in both states despite significantly lower performance in previous polls.

AFD'S SECRET MEETING HAD TRIGGERED PROTESTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Reports in the German press stated that at the end of November last year, members of the AfD Party and other racist groups met at a luxury hotel north of Potsdam for a conference titled "Remigration," where they discussed how to implement a strategy to deport all foreigners from the country should the AfD come to power. It was also stated that the meeting included discussions on revoking the citizenship of foreign-born individuals who had already become German citizens and expelling them from the country. Following the revelation of the secret meeting, the potential banning of the AfD due to its extreme racist policies and unconstitutional stance became a subject of debate, and protest demonstrations were held across the country.
