A first in Iraq after 37 years

Iraqi Ministry of Planning spokesperson Abdul-Zahra al-Hindawi stated in a press release that the census will be conducted on November 20-21, noting that the census, which will also cover the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), will be the first general census in 37 years.

Al-Hindawi noted that a trial census will be held on May 31, and that 120,000 census takers will receive training in schools after the academic year ends. Al-Hindawi announced that the census days will be public holidays in the country.

The last census across Iraq was conducted in 1997, and the country's population was announced as 22.33 million in that count, which did not include the KRG. Iraq's total population is estimated to be 43 million.
