Aesthetic alarm in the UK: Those traveling to Turkey should be warned

The death of 31-year-old Melissa Kerr, who lived in the Norfolk region of the UK, during an aesthetic surgery she underwent in Turkey has sparked a debate in the country.

Kerr lost her life in 2019 during a buttock augmentation surgery at a private hospital in Istanbul, for which she paid 3,200 pounds.

Kerr passed away on the operating table due to a pulmonary embolism while fat was being injected into her hip area.

In a report prepared by British authorities regarding the tragic death of the young woman, who was a specialist at a mental health center, it was alleged that there was negligence by the doctors in Turkey.

According to a BBC report, coroner Jacqueline Lake stated in her report prepared for the Ministry of Health that Kerr was not sufficiently informed in advance about the risks of the operation in Turkey. The report pointed out that the aesthetic procedure known as the "Brazilian butt lift" is the riskiest type of aesthetic surgery and called for measures to be taken to prevent further deaths.

Lake noted that British citizens traveling abroad for aesthetic procedures are at risk and that many are unaware of the mortality rates associated with these surgeries.

It was stated that the hospital in Turkey was also asked for their opinion on the matter. Plastic surgeon Simon Withey, who provided input for the report, emphasized that such surgeries are classified in the "high-risk" category in the UK, stating, "If the risks had been explained to Kerr, she likely would not have undergone this surgery."

In a written statement, Kerr's family said, "We hope that those who want to go to Turkey for cosmetic tourism will think more carefully."
