Ahmed al-Shara to meet with Trump at the White House

Tom Barrack, U.S. President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for the Middle East and Ambassador to Ankara, made a new statement regarding U.S.-Syria relations while in Bahrain to attend the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) "Manama Dialogue 2025" forum.

During side meetings held as part of his visit to the capital, Manama, Barrack announced that Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara is scheduled to pay an official visit to the U.S. capital, Washington, to meet with Trump.

Regarding the meeting expected to take place at the White House on November 10, Barrack said, "We hope that Syria will join the U.S.-led international coalition against ISIS."

Special Envoy Barrack stated that the U.S. government has aimed for Syria to join the coalition since 2014, adding, "We are trying to make everyone a partner in this alliance. This is very important for them."

INTERNATIONAL CONTACTS

Syrian President al-Shara's government has been working to restore stability in the country since the regime of ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad was defeated in the civil war in December 2024 and Assad left Syria. While al-Shara has been conducting official visits to various countries to re-establish political relations with nations that have kept their distance from the Damascus administration, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaibani also visited the U.S. in September of this year.

The last official visit to the White House by a high-level Syrian official is known to have been carried out in 1999 by then-Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara as part of peace negotiations between Israel and Syria.
